Cocaine is the second most addictive and popular illicit drug after marijuana, which acts as a stimulant and it interacts with the neurochemicals in our brain. Due to these interactions certain hormone reabsorption in our brain is blocked and those hormones include serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.
After the addiction to this drug, the neurochemicals in our brain is built up to a certain extent where it provokes our brain to reach and experience the high which our brain desires due to the effect of the stimulus. As the frequency is increased, the person becomes addicted as he wants to reach the desired high. The drug addiction is most common among the people who belong to the age group of 18 to 25 years. According to the survey about 37 million Americans have tried cocaine.
People can take this drug through smoking, injection and they can even snort the drug. Cocaine’s effect lasts for a short time 5-30 minutes whereas some effects may also last for more than 1-2 hours after experiencing the desired high.
It’s not easy to just quit all of a sudden, so it’s better to take smart steps and learn how to quit cocaine slowly.
Steps on how to quit cocaine:
- First off, the addicted person should admit that he/she is addicted to cocaine.
- He or she should make a promise or resolution to himself/herself that they would take small but smart steps while learning how to quit cocaine forever.
- The next step should be eliminating all those friends and colleagues who use this drug and stop hanging out with them and leave behind all those things that connect the person with drug. Whenever he/she feel like having it they should refrain themselves and engage themselves in their hobbies whichever they prefer that will bring about a change in their mindset.
- He/she should be determined that after quitting drugs he/she should never take the next hit again.
- Professional or medical help can also help the person to recover from the drug abuse. He/she can be admitted to any such institute in which he/she can be kept under proper supervision and medication that will ease the symptoms of drug withdrawal and they receive the detox facilities.
- People can undergo psychiatric counseling and cognitive–behavioral therapies that will help the person to change his behavior and learn how to quit cocaine.
- There are many cocaine or narcotics anonymous groups that can support and help the addict to recover the addiction from specific drugs. The attendants that work for these anonymous groups can keep the addict strong during the recovery period. 12 steps are involved in such programs where the addict is made to talk and counseled by such a peer who has undergone the same treatment.
- Another effective way of eliminating drug from the addict’s life is that to keep him/her busy. Idling away without any work can get the addict in trouble again. A hobby or even some exercise can refresh the addicts mind and divert his thoughts of consuming drug again.
Studies on Why Quitting Cocaine is a Good Idea:
According to SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration), the patients that are brought to the emergency rooms who are addicted or injured through drugs, are mainly addicted to cocaine. 55 percent of relapse in such drug abuse cases through cocaine is seen which occurs due to inconsistent rehabilitation of drug. Residential programs of 90 days or more are arranged for such patients and such addicts receive the best long term recovery results.
We can conclude from this study that cocaine users have a high chance of ending up in a hospital due to heart or breathing problems than for any other drug. And also it’s very important for the addict to continue with their rehab program until they have complete control, as this can help them sustain recovery sooner and maintain stronger support from the anonymous group who is helping them to recover.
In the mid of 1980, Dan Waldorf along with his colleagues in Northern California started the most ethnographic and comprehensive study of the cocaine addicts where they interviewed 267 users of cocaine, both former and present users who were not involved in any rehab programs or the ones that were in the prison. The respondents that were entertained by them were fairly educated, working, or employed belonging to the middle class. As a result they found that they mostly started the use of the drug when it was offered to them by a trusted friend. Initially they did not get high but as they increased the frequency gradually they increased their tolerance for the drug and also the insidious and seductive nature of the drug also increased. Addicts reported a downward spiral occurring in their lives which was caused by their obsession for cocaine.
This study clearly shows that cocaine users generally start their addiction when they assiacate with other cocaine users, which can also hamper one’s ability to quit the addiction when one still hangs about with these friends. Apart from the law enforments, cocaine users also face a downward turn in their social lives and employment propects, so a cocaine user should seek to break free from this addiction before the situation becomes worse. As by only making positive changes, one can look ahead to see things getting better.
